T1 Restoration Project started, click here

Well today I’ve started by stripping out all the electrics. I’ve taken loads of high detail photos just in case I get stuck when I come to put it all back together. The cables were getting in the way while I was cutting out the rust thus I had to remove them.
Below couple of photos you can also see one of the Webbers, nice hey, well ok they need a good clean.

In fact that whole engine needs a god dam good clean, oh well that will have to wait a while.

Below: before I started I took a few photos, this is what it did look like.

Below: I’ve started cutting out all signs of rust, I now have both door pillars floating in mid air, not ideal I know, but this is just until I have welded in the new parts.

Although beetles are very simple cars to work on, the amount rust on this little beauty is really amazing. Years of people owning the car and adding there little patches to cover up the rust has meant that in some places I have found the original shell metal covered by a patch panel then filler, another patch panel then fibreglass, mmm that makes for an interesting sandwich of materials. Still all of that is now being removed.

At the start of the project I set myself a time scale to get the project completed, I said it would take me a year to complete. Well how’s it going, not too bad really there is certainly more rust then I had thought but I have a good feeling and think that I might just have the car back on the road for early summer. At which stage I can then start to think about what colour to paint it and the added extras, such as the audio system, trim, seats etc etc.

The wings and back floor pan are heavily hit areas when it comes to rust, so I have removed large sections from these areas and will soon start to replace with new panels.
